ICELANDIC WARMTH

When is the last time Iceland made headlines for something positive? Crippling ash clouds ruined travel plans for much of 2010. Crippling debt and plummeting currency plunged its economy into utter crisis. But if you think this has created a nation of gloom, you’d be mistaken.

The bustling art and fashion season has braved the storm that has left little else standing. And these industries are not using the recent tragedies as fodder, producing somber and sobering works. Instead the happiness that the Icelandic people are known for is on full display. Svandís Egilsdóttir is one of these joyful artists who allows her heart and not problems of the day to control her art creation.

The art is fresh and inviting; Egilsdóttir utilizes sweeping strokes with vibrant colors, in addition to giving each section of her canvas enough detail to independently occupy the eye. Her work tells a story, but also allows the viewer to create a personal connection to each piece. With ten years of exhibiting winning work, Svandís Egilsdóttir is a success story Iceland that be quite proud of.
